Opening Night Film: THE CHILDREN OF IRENA SENDER

As a Polish Catholic social worker in the early 1940's, Irena Sendler created and led a conspiracy of women who moved in and out of Warsaw's Jewish Ghetto disguised as nurses employed by the Warsaw's Health Department. Though they worked under the guise of merely attempting to prevent and contain the spread of typhus and spotted fever, Sendler and her brave cohorts emerged each time with the children of consenting Jewish parents. The children were sometimes sedated and hidden inside boxes, suitcases and coffins as a means of rescuing them from their imminent deportation to death camps. They were given new identities and placed with Polish families and in convents. Sendler kept a hidden record of their birth names and where they were placed with the hope that they would some day be reunited with their own families.

In 1943, the Nazis discovered Sendler's daring and dangerous ruse and arrested her. She was tortured by Gestapo agents and suffered broken feet. On the day of her scheduled execution she was rescued by "Zegota," the underground network with which she worked to save the Jewish children.

As a result of Sendler's efforts, approximately 2,500 children were smuggled to safety. Not a single child she rescued was ever betrayed or discovered by the Nazis.

Italian filmmakers at New York City's inaugural SoHo International Film Festival

New York, NY – February 21, 2010 – The inaugural 2010 SoHo International Film Festival - presented by Made In New York and the Office of New York Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, will be held from February 18 – 21, 2010 in New York City.

Commencing with Italian feature film by Director Mariano Lamberti, "Non Con Un Bang" is a dramatic comedy which melds two archetypes: Franz Kafka meets Enrico Caruso. By the shadow of ominous corked-up volcano Mount Vesuvius, slayer of Pompeii in AD 79, a seemingly well-bred and well-heeled suburban kid finds himself, much like the volcano itself, corked-up and trapped within his well-planned-in-advance existence. Unlike Kafkaesque anti-hero Gregor Samsa, he does not literally turn into an insect, but, much to his chagrin and confusion, his spirit starts morphing into one.

Francesco Colangelo's dramatic short film, "Il Male Assoluto" which remembers forty years of Francesco's life as it triumphs through adversity and violence. Majestically filmed and set to a stirring piano sequence, it is a stunning short commentary.

“We are honored to present the World Premiere of Mariano Lamberti's feature film, "Non Con Un Bang", it is a unique, thought provoking film with a universal message. Francesco Colangelo's short film "Il Male Assoluto" is a compelling and inspiring love story. Both of these films, truly reflect the spirit of the SoHo International Film Festival, and we are proud to have them here in our inaugural year," said SIFF Co-founders, Luis Pedron and Jorge Ballos.

World Documentaries Centerpiece Showcase at 2010 Soho International Film Festival
Inaugural Soho International Film Festival showcases three powerful world documentaries as centerpiece

New York City, NY – (2/19/2010) – The inaugural 2010 SoHo International Film Festival - presented by Made In New York and the Office of New York Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, showcased three feature length documentaries in their centerpiece program.

Commencing with Program 6, the USA/Indonesian co-production of "Guerrilla Midwife" by director Beja Bernhardt follows Ibu Robin Lim into the trenches of her work. From Bali, where hemorrhage after childbirth is a leading cause of death, into the Tsunami disaster zone in Aceh, where her battle is fought with only one weapon, love. In this culturally mesmerizing, heart-wrenching documentary, you will discover why we must reinvent our protocols for pregnancy and childbirth in order to preserve our Planet’s Humanity.

Director Jeremy Taylor followed with Program 7's, "Burma: An Indictment" a Burma/USA coproduction. Murder, rape and slavery are part of the daily routine for the Burmese people. The documentary shows the inhumane conditions the gentle Burmese people suffer every day and the few families who can, snake their way across the Thai border to receive the most basic health care. Live through the experiences of a man who was kept in solitary confinement for fifteen years and learn from the monks, now in exile, who started the “Saffron Revolution”. Witness the squalor of the Thai refugee camp and view shocking footage of Cyclone Nargis victims. “BURMA: AN INDICTMENT” exposes a wealthy country whose people are starving in the streets helpless at the hands of a brutal military dictatorship.

The evening concluded with director Gary Null's "Autism: Made In The USA" (Program 8). Null, a renowned American talk radio host and author on alternative and complementary medicine and nutrition investigates Autism, what it is and why is it on the rise. In this feature length documentary presentation, Null's quest is to reveal the true causes and promising solutions for the recent dramatic increase in autism in our children. Is autism related to environmental factors? Could it be caused by mercury, aluminum, viruses, or other toxins contained in the 40-odd vaccines that every American child must receive? What are other environmental or genetic factors which could be contributing to the epidemic increase in childhood autism?

2010 SoHo International Film Festival Announces 'One In The Gun' as Official Closing Night Premiere

Post-Film Q&A with director/writer Rolfe Kanefsky, Producer Esther Goodstein, star Steven Man

New York, NY – February 6, 2010 – The inaugural 2010 SoHo International Film Festival - presented by Made In New York and the Office of New York Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, will be held from February 18 – 21, 2010 in New York City.

The festival will close with Rolfe Kanefsky’s neo-noir ‘One In The Gun’ at the festival lofts theater, 394 Broadway 4th Fl. New York, NY 10013, at 7:30 PM on February 21, 2010. This is the world premiere of the film.

Leading film critic, Betty Jo Tucker of Reel Talk Movie Reviews, wrote, “One in the Gun [is] a fascinating film noir with bizarre David Lynchian undertones. Written and directed by Rolfe Kanefsky, this intriguing movie boasts a complicated plot, mysterious characters and disturbing surprises. It wallows in situations involving seduction, robbery, madness and murder. And every time you think you’ve got things figured out, something happens to make you think again.”

Kanefsky, whose works are well known in the horror genre, wrote the script in three months, drawing inspiration from the classic noirs. “Film noir is one of my favorite genres, it truly draws on every facet of human emotion, so when Steven (Man, lead actor) and I were looking to create a project, it made perfect sense and created what I feel was a great vehicle to showcase the range of his talent.” 'One In The Gun' also stars Robert Davi (Die Hard, The Goonies, James Bond’s “License To Kill”), Katherine Randolph (Jarhead, Black Ops) with Steven Bauer (Scarface, Primal Fear, Traffic) and James Russo (Public Enemies, Donny Brasco, Beverly Hills Cop).

Charles Papas, author of It's a Bitter Little World: The Smartest, Toughest, Nastiest Quotes from Film Noir sums it up with “as long as life disappoints, men and women betray each other, and what we need gets us killed, there'll always be film noir.”

“We are honored to present the World Premiere of Manmade Entertainment Productions', 'One In The Gun' as the festival’s official closing night feature film presentation,” said SIFF Co-founders, Luis Pedron and Jorge Ballos. “We were impressed and honored to receive entries from around the world and feel that this film not only met, but surpassed our festival mandate of cutting-edge digital films that honoring traditional forms of storytelling.”

2010 SoHo International Film Festival Announces “Just Like Joe” as Official Opening Night Premiere!

Post-Film Q&A with director/writer Fred Carpenter & select members of the cast

New York, NY – (2/8/2010) – The inaugural 2010 SoHo International Film Festival - Presented by Made In New York and the Office of New York Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, will be held from February 18 – 21, 2010 in New York City.

The festival will open with Fred Carpenters drama “Just Like Joe” at the festival lofts theatre, 394 Broadway 4th Fl. New York, NY 10013, at 7:30 PM on February 21, 2010.

“Just Like Joe” is a poignant coming-of-age story that will touch your heart and bring you back to an era when Woodstock became legend and the Peace, Love and Rock 'N Roll generation was just starting out.

Set in the tumultuous year of 1969, the film follows the lives of three 17-year old, high school football players bonded by friendship and their compelling need to find their place in a rapidly changing world. Longing for a senior year filled with dating, the prom and football glory, their normal rites of passage run smack into the drama and uncertainty of the times - the military draft, evolving sexual mores, racial inequality and the possibly fighting in the Vietnam War.

“We are excited and honored to kick off the festival with Fred Carpenter’s feature film, Just Like Jeo” said, SIFFNYC co-founders Jorge Ballos and Luis Pedron, “SIFFNYC’s mandate is to discover new artists and provide a global platform to emerging independent filmmakers to showcase their creativity. Screen Actors Guild (SAG) honors Charles Durning with Lifetime Achievement Award

Honoree and legend of the silver screen, Charles Durning, gives a BREAK to independent filmmakers on new film

(Hollywood, CA) (1/28/2008) - SAG Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, the legendary Charles Durning is as much a working actor today, as he was over the forty years of his highly acclaimed career. Moreover, Durning who's credits include "The Sting", "O' Brother Where Art Thou?", "Tootsie" goes beyond the comfort zone of the studios and supports independent filmmakers such as Director/Writer Marc Clebanoff and Producer Jennifer Champagne, who had the opportunity to work with the master this past month on their currently lensing feature film, BREAK.

"Durning is a classic," said Clebanoff who penned the character of the Wise Man expressly for Durning. "And seeing him against the young pros like Michael Madsen and Frank Krueger, you instantly know why he is being honored. He is a consummate actor."

Champagne echoed the sentiments adding, "Durning added that element of the extraordinary, I stopped all that I was doing and was mesmerized by his performance - he and Marc had a natural sense of communication - something every director and actor wish for."

With great aplomb the team sent heartfelt congratulations to Durning for being acknowledged with such a well-deserved award.

About BREAK, The Movie (http://www.NoCleanBreak.Com)
Break is a stylistic noir drama about an introverted hit man named Frank who is contracted to carry out an unusual job. When the city’s crime boss, known only as “The Man”, discovers that he’s terminally ill, he enlists Frank to carry out his own assassination. “The Man”, however, is selfish and jealous, and doesn’t want to die alone, and makes it clear to Frank that he is to take out the woman he loves in addition to himself. When Frank discovers that The Woman is his own long lost lover, Frank alters the job making himself the next mark. In an action-packed Kill Bill style chain of character-driven events, riddled with dark humor and visual spectacle, Frank and The Woman take on the many enemies set out before them before they can free themselves from The Man’s jealous grip.

The cast of BREAK also includes, Frank Krueger ("The Game"), Chad Everett ("Mulholland Drive"), Sarah Thompson ("7th Heaven"), Michael Madsen ("Sin City", "Reservoir Dogs"), Mackenzie Firgens ("Rent"), Matthew Jones, Xin Sarith Wuku ("American Gladiators", "Honor"), Billy Idol, James Russo ("Donnie Brasco") and David Carradine ("Kill Bill").
