A Knight Without Armor in a Savage Land

From the Thrilling Detective Web Site:

Paladin

Created by Sam Rolfe and Herb Meadow

"A knight without armor in a savage land."
-from the theme song

Perhaps the only genre more popular than private eyes in television's early years was the Western, so it's probably not all that surprising that someone soon came up with the idea of combining the two. In 1957, Have Gun-Will Travel made its debut on CBS, and soon became one of the most popular programs of the fifties. It ranked in the top five almost immediately and after that trailed only Gunsmoke and Wagon Train for the rest of its run. The theme song, co-written by star Richard Boone, even became a hit single.

On the surface, dapper, black-clad Paladin was just a high-priced gun-for-hire, but in reality he was actually a sort of troubleshooter and private lawman-for-hire (a private eye, if you will), often sent out into the wilds to places where there was little, if any, law.

But his strong sense of ethics soon established for viewers that he was no mere assassin. A man of morals and conscience, he would at least try to settle a dispute without violence whenever possible. He occasionally would even turn on his clients, if he felt they were in the wrong.

Paladin was also a man of culture, West Point-educated (he served as an Union officer in the Civil War), literate, with a taste for fine food and clothing and the theatre. He dressed like a dandy and made his headquarters in the ritzy Hotel Carlton in San Francisco. His calling card featured a picture of the white knight in chess (a paladin is a knight renowned for his heroism and chivalry) and the inscription from which the show drew its title: "Have Gun, Will Travel...Wire San Francisco."

It was only when he was at work that he ditched the fancy duds, and clad completely in black, with his six-gun stapped low on his thigh, he rode off in search of justice, or something like it, a "knight without armour in a savage land."

Boone, as Paladin, brought a sense of dignity and weight to the role. Despite the Western trappings, one of the more watchable of the early P.I. shows.

ElderGadget.com Investigates the Senior Friendly Aspects of Convergence in Consumer Electronics

CES 2011 showcased products and features that will have enormous benefits to the 50+ boomer and senior.

Beverly Hills, CA -- The technological world gathered in Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and ElderGadget.com was at the center of the activity, reviewing the latest product developments and how they will impact the active aging boomer / senior community.

Elie Gindi, founder of ElderGadget.com, earmarked three key trends from CES: Convergence, Universal Interfaces (including the human body as an easy to use interface), and Voice Recognition and assessed how these will likely affect the lives of 50+ adults, including the benefits and accessibility they bring.

How many different devices, appliances, and gadgets does an individual use in a day? How many different ways of doing things does one have to learn? Each device has its own set of buttons, its own individually designed interface, and its own way of doing things. Moreover, most people have had to learn to use them all, one at a time, which may make buying a new device intimidating.

Wouldn't it be nice if there were only one interface to learn and that interface would control most of the technology in your life? If that is your wish, take heart, it's starting to come true. Devices and apps are coming together, making them all easier to learn and use.

Gindi calls convergence "a gift to seniors." He goes on to say, "What is happening this year, is that manufacturers are beginning to converge their devices. From the phone, to the large TV, the tablet and to the computer, the hardware is different, but now, manufacturers are using the same interface to run them all."

How does this make it senior friendly? "One of the problems of why things are not friendly to seniors is that seniors generally don't take the time or see the need to learn something new. So if you give them a tablet, they may say, 'what do I need the tablet for, I'm perfectly fine with what I'm doing, technology is so complicated, why should I learn it.' However, they may be watching a lot of TV, so they would be very motivated to learn how to use the TV. If the TV has the same interface as the tablet, and they pick up the tablet, there is no barrier to learning how to use it; they've already learned the technology -- same thing with the phone."

Gindi believes that technology is moving from the many to the one interface and that this shift will help individuals maximize the "use" of the available technology with minimal effort and competitively. "While we will all benefit from it," he says, "seniors will benefit the most." Coining the phrase the 'new useable,' Gindi refers to the ability for the aging boomer and senior to stay connected and interactive longer and compete with greater ease.

Gindi goes into greater depth in the following interviews: http://www.eldergadget.com/ces/elie-gindi-on-convergence-full-video

3 Amazing Reasons To Be In San Diego this November

For Immediate Release
September 16, 2009

3 Amazing Reasons To Be In San Diego this November...
Stars, Spectacular Events and Outrageous Fun Top The List For Weekend Before Thanksgiving.

San Diego, CA (09/16/08)- The top three reasons to be in San Diego this coming fall, or more particularly, November 22 and 23, 2008 are easily: stars, spectacular events and outrageous fun. If you are looking to be a bit more specific, you will want to get in town early, the weekend before Thanksgiving and get out your autograph book, some sun screen and more than likely your cell phone so you can call your best friends and tell them who you just saw!

The 62nd Annual, dare we say All Star, Mother Goose Parade is anything but a community parade. This event, whose attendance soared over 1/4 million in 2007, has single handedly redefined one of the greatest Americana traditions, becoming not only the Macy's Parade of the West, but by being one of the largest, free, public celebrity-driven events in America.

The culmination of a year's worth of charitable activity programs from continuing education, animal rescues, economic development, to empowering all that is going green; the Mother Goose Parade is without a question one of San Diego County's greatest treasures. A brand that has existed for 62 years through the best and worst of times, it is a symbol of spirit, inspiration and hope for children of all ages. Behind it are dozens of film, television, music, sports and humanitarian celebrities who give their star power to make countless dreams a reality.

In 2007, Mother Goose went through a full-tilt makeover: beyond going on a healthy diet, she was given all the bling one might expect of a cultural icon hitting an Oscar sized red carpet for the first time! And now, in 2008 the change continues with the addition of an all-star, teen pop/rock concert and festival scheduled to hit the streets the day before! Multi-threats like Nickelodeon's "iCarly" star Jennette McCurdy will take the stage, singing their latest releases... and the best part... it's free for the entire family! Over 30 teen stars are rumored to be performing, presenting and just bumping into you in one of the many interactive booths that will line downtown El Cajon's Main Street, so get your cameras and cell phones ready!

Reluctant to ever take any credit, the powerhouse behind this reinvention is Jillian Hanson-Cox, a true visionary who appreciates from her personal experiences how much one event can change a life. With the support of an incredible board of directors, celebrities, sponsors and media, Jillian is helping to make San Diego and its counties must see destinations and is bringing to the spectators a weekend full of events that will hopefully leave an indelibly positive mark on their lives.

Some of the 50+ celebrities you will see this fall are the ruggedly handsome television icon Kevin Sorbo, of "Hercules" and "Andromeda" fame; the dashing Brit, James Scott, who plays EJ Wells on "Days Of Our Lives"; Ashley Benson, the stunning young star of "Bring It On: In It To Win" and teenage Jean Grey in the upcoming XMen: Origins; and while it may be too late to "Vote Pedro", catching Efren Ramirez in "Crank 2" out this fall will be a given. The curious are encouraged to check in regularly for star additions, and in the meantime, anyone who fawned over "Men In Trees" star Scott Elrod, perhaps you can add to OK Magazine's list of the "Five Reasons We Love Scott"!

For more details and event schedules, please visit http://www.MotherGooseParade.org and to book your stay at MGP08 Official Headquarter hote, the W Hotel of San Diego, log on to: www.Whotels.com/SanDiego

Event date: Saturday and Sunday, November 22 & 23, 2008 - the weekend BEFORE Thanksgiving.

The San Diego Mega Star competition was created to discover and promote San Diego county singing talent.
