A Knight Without Armor in a Savage Land

From the Thrilling Detective Web Site:

Paladin

Created by Sam Rolfe and Herb Meadow

"A knight without armor in a savage land."
-from the theme song

Perhaps the only genre more popular than private eyes in television's early years was the Western, so it's probably not all that surprising that someone soon came up with the idea of combining the two. In 1957, Have Gun-Will Travel made its debut on CBS, and soon became one of the most popular programs of the fifties. It ranked in the top five almost immediately and after that trailed only Gunsmoke and Wagon Train for the rest of its run. The theme song, co-written by star Richard Boone, even became a hit single.

On the surface, dapper, black-clad Paladin was just a high-priced gun-for-hire, but in reality he was actually a sort of troubleshooter and private lawman-for-hire (a private eye, if you will), often sent out into the wilds to places where there was little, if any, law.

But his strong sense of ethics soon established for viewers that he was no mere assassin. A man of morals and conscience, he would at least try to settle a dispute without violence whenever possible. He occasionally would even turn on his clients, if he felt they were in the wrong.

Paladin was also a man of culture, West Point-educated (he served as an Union officer in the Civil War), literate, with a taste for fine food and clothing and the theatre. He dressed like a dandy and made his headquarters in the ritzy Hotel Carlton in San Francisco. His calling card featured a picture of the white knight in chess (a paladin is a knight renowned for his heroism and chivalry) and the inscription from which the show drew its title: "Have Gun, Will Travel...Wire San Francisco."

It was only when he was at work that he ditched the fancy duds, and clad completely in black, with his six-gun stapped low on his thigh, he rode off in search of justice, or something like it, a "knight without armour in a savage land."

Boone, as Paladin, brought a sense of dignity and weight to the role. Despite the Western trappings, one of the more watchable of the early P.I. shows.

HRH Princess Theodora of Greece & Denmark to attend 2011 Latin Grammy’s

Los Angeles, CA (11/7/11) -- HRH Princess Theodora of Greece and Denmark (Teodora de Grecia y Dinamarca) will be attending the 2011 Latin Grammy’s in Las Vegas on Thursday, November 10, 2011.

The daughter of King Constantine II of Greece and Queen Anne-Marie of Denmark, HRH Princess Theodora has been the highlight of worldwide entertainment news these past two weeks, following the announcement of her addition as a recurring character on globally broadcast American soap opera, The Bold and The Beautiful (Belleza y Poder), where she will play a recurring character of Alison, a personal secretary to publishing baddie Bill Spencer (Don Diamont).

Additionally, Princess Theodora just returned from Mexico’s Baja Studios, where she filmed a cameo role for multi-award winning filmmaker Alejandro Monteverde’s new feature film, “Little Boy” which stars Sean Astin, Emily Watson, Kevin James, David Henrie, Tom Wilkinson, Ben Chaplin and Ali Landry (produced by Leo Severino and Eduardo Verástegui – who also appears in the film).

Currently, Princess Theodora may be seen in the Neil LaBute play, “AutoBahn” at the Renegade Theatre in Los Angeles, which runs to November 20, 2011.

“I am truly honored to have been invited to attend the Latin Grammys – the Latin culture and people have a very special place in my heart – they are passionate, warm, colorful and caring, much like the people in Greece.  Filming in Mexico was a wonderful experience and I hope to visit and maybe even film, in many other countries soon. I am practicing my Spanish to ensure I am ready!”

Stars shine in support of Pat Tillman

2nd Annual Scott Medlock Celebrity Invitational Golf Classic and private concert with The Doors' Robby Krieger benefiting the Pat Tillman Foundation surpasses expectations!

Hollywood, CA (12/01/09) -- The 2nd Annual Scott Medlock Celebrity Invitational Golf Classic and private rock concert with The Doors' Robby Krieger benefiting the Pat Tillman Foundation surpassed everyone's expectations, says event chair, Scott Medlock. "We are honored that so many friends joined the cause and donated both their time and resources to make this event such a resounding success." Co-founder, Robby Krieger of the Doors went on to say, "we saw today that spirit triumphs schedules and pocketbooks. The Tillman Foundation changes the lives of people every day, our goal was to contribute to their being able to continue doing that, and everyone, from players to sponsors, family to friends, has made that a reality."

The tournament, which was held at the stunning Malibu Country Club was won by the all-star team of George Lazenby (aka James Bond from "Her Majesty's Secret Service"), Scott Elrod (who many remember as "Cash" from ABC's "Men In Trees") and businessman David Katz. A close second, and almost winners of the hole-in-one grand prize of four new Mercedes-Benz' from W.I. Simonson Mercedes-Benz were Michael Chiklis star of FOX's "The Shield", Kenny Johnson also from "The Shield", Stephen Bishop (star of "The Rundown") and TNT's Aldis Hodge from "Leverage".

"24's" Jaime Gomez, and "G.I. Joe's" Gunner Wright, teamed up with CBS's "Dancing With The Stars" heart throbs, Driton "Tony" Dovolani and Maks aka Maksim Chmerkovskiy while Kevin Dobson ("Days of Our Lives") and SyFy's "Stargate SG-1" star Christopher Judge played with founders Scott Medlock and Robby Krieger - both teams within inches of capturing the second hole-in-one top prize of four stunning new Harley Davidson Motorcycles!

Scott Medlock, one of the Tillman family's close friends said of Pat, "Pat (Tillman) gave up a $3.6 million dollar contract with the NFL-Arizona Cardinals to go fight for our country. Pat unfortunately lost his life while serving in Afghanistan. Last year the foundation was able to give over $650,000.00 in scholarships to vets & their families who have been impacted by the Iraq & Afghanistan wars. These scholarships allow families who have lost loved ones, or have been crippled physically and or emotionally, the opportunity to still impact our great nation in a positive way while contributing with their gifts & talents. It also educates the youth of our future & carries the Legacy Pat started by serving others & paying the ultimate price. This is truly an opportunity to invest into something so much bigger than we are and our sponsors like Best Buy are making it possible." Special guest, J. R. Martinez of "All My Children" a wounded vet himself, couldn't agree more and spent the day circling the course, reiterating to all present the value of their participation.

One of the crowning moments, beyond the Tommy Bahama Rum stop, or the Titlest Tent, or even the Zino Platinum Cigars that were driven about the course, was clearly the changing booth provided by Loudmouth Golf Apparel so that every player could don the company's completely outrageous pants and shorts (skorts and shorts for the women) including Transamerica Insurance & Investment's President Ken Kilbane; Johnny Carson Foundation Director Larry Witzer, his brother Marc, Waste Management Vice President, Larry Metter and HUB International's Vice President, Lee Davis! Event photographs are tell tale, as players swaggered about the awards ceremony and continued on at the Canyon Club's private rock concert with The Doors' Robby Krieger, sipping on a pint of Budweiser, a glass of Zealear Wine, or Kettle One martini in their fresh, very 'Loudmouth'-ed togs!

Kicking off the concert, the Charity Angels rounded out the last spots on the Opportunity Board, which included an Gibson Guitar autographed by The Doors' Robby Krieger complete private lesson with the legend himself! Special guest, Adrian Young of "No Doubt" also took the stage in an impromptu performance, with rising rock sensation 13-year old, Sacha Edwards.

"We are very excited to this event growing annually...2010 will be wild!" said Krieger. Additional featured sponsors include Monster Energy, Honda, Taylor-Made Golf, Cheesecake Factory, Arnold Palmer Ice-Tee, Captured Images, Stoli Vodka, B3DigiGrafx, Manchester Financial, HUB International, Hansen's Natural, Hill Financial Advisors, Culligan, Travis Mathew Apparel and Popular Press Media Group (PPMG).
