Shammi Kapoor: Life in Pics

It's a sad day for Bollywood as actor Shammi Kapoor, whose war cry yahooooo became part of the Bollywood lore, moves on to the hereafter.
He ruled the late 1950s and 1960s with his unique style and versatile range, passed away on Sunday at the Breach Candy Hospital here, family sources said.
He was 79. He is survived by his wife Neela Devi, son Aditya Raj and daughter Kanchan Desai. (BCCL/Shantanu Das)
According to the sources, he was on dialysis for the last few years and was undergoing the procedure at least thrice a week. He was on Saturday admitted to the ICU of the hospital. (BCCL/Nilesh Kulkarni)

The actor, who made his debut in Bollywood in 1953, when the film 'Jeevan Jyoti' was released, carved out a niche for himself with the superhit Junglee in 1961.

Shammi Kapoor won the Filmfare Best Actor Award in 1968 for his performance in 'Brahmachari'.
His new image took ground and his subsequent films were all in this genre later.

He shared a very close relationship with Aamir's uncle Nasir Hussain, who directed him in Teesri Kasam, Tumsa Nahin Dekha and Dil Deke Dekho. He said 'Aamir has grown up in front of my eyes and I am very proud of his achievements. Aamir made one very moving comment about me at a felicitation function' ; He said, 'Shammi Kapoor is not the Elvis Presley of India. With me, is my girlfriend, Nadia Gamal, a belly dancer who I met in Ceylon and as we were in love we were to get married. Somehow things didn't work out and she went back to Cairo. At that age, she was 17 and I was 22.' How different would his life and times been had he moved to Egypt for her? We can only imagine...
